About Me
Called to Dance:
Statement of Faith and Spiritual Journey

My name is Rhonda Newby-Torres and I serve as the lay Pastor for Luther House at the University of New Mexico and Central New Mexico Community College in Albuquerque, NM.

I am a mother, preacher, teacher, learner, activist, herbalist, pastor, farmer, and so much more! I graduated in 2021 with a Master of Theological Studies and I'm currently in the ordination process with the United Church of Christ Southwest Conference. I specialize in ministry that builds bridges between denominations, churches, academia, activism, and the streets. I believe we are all called to priesthood and service, prayer and action, deep listening, and restorative justice.

I spent many years as a Community Organizer and Co-Director of East Central Ministries, which is where I was "raised-up" in community-based Christianity. I followed my call (after 2 years of discernment) to seminary and a professional role as the Director of Children, Youth, and Family Ministries for First Congregational UCC, where I continue to worship.

I'm excited to serve for and on behalf of the United Church of Christ and my community in our commitment to living as the body of Christ, working together as siblings, sharing an open table, loving God, and loving people. I'm grateful for this meaningful opportunity and journey in/toward/with the beloved community.

Blessings,

Rhonda Newby-Torres (she/her/hers)

    My Story

    Called to Dance:

    Introduction and Spiritual Journey

“Your vocation in life is where your greatest joy meets the world's greatest need.” Frederick Buechner

“If I can’t dance, I don’t want to be a part of your revolution”

    Emma Godlman

Being called by God into ministry (whether it is professional ministry in the church or a more personalized ministry like foster parenting) is a profound personal experience- a feeling deep inside, a recurring passion, being continually drawn toward something. It is more than an interest, it is a feeling of belonging, being made for, even envy for those who get to practice it. Author Glennon Doyle invites her readers to let envy be their teacher- Who are you jealous of? Who do you wish you could be more like? Learn what makes your heart pump harder about that person, and start becoming that!
